Baker Baptist History

Originally known as the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church this work was organized in 1854 by Noah T. Byars and twelve faithful members.  Some of the names of the charter members are Mally and Kathrine Gregory, Joe and Kathrine Baker, R. N. and Rachelle Johnson, Ellen Seddon, Sarah Criswell, George and Rhoda Potter, and Jake and Lina Cross. Church members at the time were meeting in a Blacksmith shop on Mill Creek near the present Long Creek Cemetery.  At the time, the Baptist church and Methodist church took turns keep watch of each other for possible Indian attack while they were having church services.

Around 1856 the church moved about two miles north of that location onto some land owned by Rev. Byars.  A few years later around 1904 the church burnt and the members moved east and built on land owned by Josiah A. Baker.  This building was beside the Baker community schoolhouse.  In 1912 church records were destroyed by fire in the W. D. Armstrong home.  Brothers J. O. Armstrong, W. D. Armstrong, R. L. Roack, Joe Young, Sisters Dovie Snider and Miss Minnie Wilson were appointed as a committee to work up a new church roll and history.

During the 1940's a coal-firewood shed was torn down and an open tabernacle was built by the Baker community located to the south of the old school and to the West of the church.  In 1997 the tabernacle was reroofed and concrete was added for a floor.

In 1950 the church was renamed as Baker Baptist Church and became a new charter member of the Southern Baptist Convention.  In 1957 after church vote the original building was torn down and a new church building built.  In 1987 with the help of retired Baptist builders, the church built a new brick building in front of the 1957 building.  The original 1957 building is now the education building used to teach children's Sunday School classes.

In May of 2024 Baker Baptist Church celebrated 170 years of Faithful Service in the Baker community reaching lost people in the Baker community with the lifesaving message of Jesus Christ.

What we Believe

The Scriptures

The Holy Bible was written by men divinely inspired and is God's revelation of Himself to man. It has God for its author, salvation for its end, and truth, without any mixture of error, for its matter.

2 Timothy 3:16-17

God

There is one and only one living and true God.  The eternal God reveals Himself to us as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, with distinct personal attributes, but without division of nature, essence, or being.

Deuteronomy 6:4

God the Father

Reigns with providential care over His universe and His creation, according to the purposes of His grace. God is Father in truth to those who become children of God through faith in Jesus Christ.

1 Corinthians 8:6

God the Son

Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God.  In His incarnation He was conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He honored his Father by his Death on the Cross and his resurrection from the dead in which he provided the redemption of man from sin.

John 1:14

God the Holy Spirit

Is the Spirit of God who exalts Christ.  He convicts of sin, of righteousness and judgment.  He enlightens and empowers the believer and the church in worship, evangelism, and service.

John 14:26

Man

Man was created by the special act of God in His own image, and is the crowning work of His creation.  By his free choice man sinned against God and brought sin into the human race through the actions of Adam and Eve.

Genesis 1:27

Salvation

Involves the redemption of the whole man, and is offered freely to all who accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.  Provided by the shed blood of Jesus Christ death on the cross.  Salvation includes regeneration, sanctification, and glorification.

John 3:16

The Church

A New Testament church is an autonomous local body of baptized believers of all ages who are associated by covenant in the faith and fellowship of the gospel and redeemed.

Acts 2:42, Hebrews 10:24-25

Baptism and the Lord's Supper

Christian Biblical baptism is the immersion of a believer in water and is an act of obedience symbolizing the believers faith in a crucified, buried, and risen Savior, the believers death to sin, the burial of the life, and the resurrection to walk in newness of life in Christ Jesus.

Matthew 28:19, Acts 2:38

The Lord's supper is a symbolic act of obedience whereby members memorializing the death of the Redeemer and anticipating His second coming.

Matthew 26:26-28, Mark 14:22-25

Family

God has ordained the family as the foundational institution of human society.  Marriage is the unity of one man and one woman in covenant committed for a lifetime.  The husband and wife are of equal worth before God, since both are created in God's image.  The marriage relationship models the way God relates to His people.  The Family is created as an example from the creation of Adam and Eve.

Genesis 2:24, Exodus 20:12, Proverbs 22:6, Colossians 3:13
